Camper Van Road-Trip: What to Pack?

Ok, so I have a slight confession. I’ve never actually travelled anywhere in a camper van. But it’s never too late, right? With a week to spare between finishing up with work in Wellington and flying back to the UK it was time to experience life on the road, as a “hardcore” traveller.

Seven nights in a camper the size of a box, the only access to hot water from camp sites and on a $50 a day budget. Yep, that’s hard core for me, but seeing how I survive it is for another post.

First things first, I want to get the packing right. After all, regardless of whether you’re travelling luxury or budget, you’ve got to look good doing it!

CLOTHES WISE

With my dress wear and heels packed away ready for the flight home, I started to sift through the remainder of my wardrobe.

This is what I ended up choosing:

Bottoms

Tops

  • 1 white blouse, 1 black jumper, 2x tank tops (khaki and rust), 3x long sleeve tops (black, navy, grey), 2 tees

Coats

  • 1x puffa coat, 1x leather jacket, 1x grey long cardigan

Shoes

  • 1x trainers, 1x plimsoles, 1x flip-flops, (essential for the campsite showers), 1x sandals

Nightwear

  • 1x onesie, 1x fluffy socks (for when the camper gets cold!)

TOILETRIES, MAKE-UP & ACCESSORIES

Then comes the hard part, toiletries and make-up. Good job NZ domestic flights don’t restrict you to 100ml in your carry-on.

This is what I ended up choosing:

Make-up

  • Highlighter, foundation, concealer, brow tint, bronzer palette, blusher, lip liner, vaseline

Toiletries

  • Manual toothbrush, toothpaste, 2 in 1 shampoo, moisturiser, face wipes, suncream

Accessories

  • Sunnies, cap, watch, bikini, earphones, book (for when there’s no wifi)

TO CAPTURE THE MOMENTS

The majority of room taken up in my backpack will no doubt be from my photography equipment.

For this trip, I’m taking:

  • GoPro Hero 5 Session, Panasonic Lumix FZ300 camera, Manfrotto mini tripod, iPhone 6, and possibly my Macbook

THINGS THAT MIGHT COME IN HANDY

Not leaving anything to chance and anticipating we could get bitten to death one night or I’ll need the toilet at 1 am when it’s pitch black outside.

Here are my emergency/extra prepared accessories:

  • mini first aid kit, torch, paracetamol, hayfever tablets, insect repellant, bottle opener

Have you ever been travelling in a camper? What do you wish you would have taken?
